8, The Play

Asheville Folks, we're hoping you can help spread the word about this important upcoming production!

Next week, Artistic Director Erinn Huntley will appear in a staged reading of “8”, a play written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter and American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) Founding Board Member Dustin Lance Black.  It is an unprecedented account of the Federal District Court trial in Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Perry v. Brown), the case filed by AFER to overturn Proposition 8, which stripped gay and lesbian Californians of the fundamental freedom to marry.

Black, who penned the Academy Award-winning feature film "Milk" and the new critically-acclaimed film "J. Edgar," based “8” on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.  AFER has licensed several readings across the state as a way of engaging people before North Carolina votes on its own marriage amendment known locally as "Amendment One".

The Asheville performance will be Tuesday, April 10 at 7 PM at Diana Wortham Theatre and is a benefit fundraiser for the American Foundation for Equal Rights. Tickets are $15 Regular/$10 Students and can be purchased at the DWT Box Office online, over the phone, and in person.

North Carolina Stage Company, director Angie Flynn-McIver, and the Diana Wortham Theatre have gathered a wide range of actors from all over Asheville to participate with help from lots of other theatre companies from around the city, including Anam Cara.  We'd love to have your help spreading the word via email, social media, word of mouth, and whatever else you can muster.

Naked Girls Reading 5 -- This Weekend!

"There are those who so dislike the nude that they find something indecent in the naked truth." F.H. Bradley

Naked Girls Reading performances are THIS WEEKEND!
Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th, both at 8pm.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Purchase them with a credit card over the phone or on this website, or in person at The Anam Cara Collective or Firestorm Cafe.

A note from Director Erinn Huntley. . .

I'm excited to be working on Anam Cara's fifth production of Naked Girls Reading, and I am grateful for the continued community support of such an important and empowering show. In a society where simple nudity is viewed as taboo and women's bodies are so often objectified and are valued according to an idealized and unrealistic standard, I believe it is important to continue to push boundaries and help to normalize real women's bodies and celebrate them for their differences. I am honored to be working with such a dedicated, intelligent, fun, and collaborative group of women. I truly hope you enjoy the show as much as I have enjoyed being a part of its creation.

We Are The 99%

We have a cast! Auditions were fantastic, and we've pulled together a wonderful ensemble for We Are The 99%!

These fabulous folks are as follows: Kristen Aldrich, Julian Dominic, Kimberly Hartman, Michael Taylor, and Emily Wooton.

Show dates are March 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, and 18, all at 8pm. Sunday shows are "pay-what-you-can" nights.
