Experimental Theatre Ensemble AUDITIONS
Sun 7/14 1-3pm + Mon 7/15 7:30-9:30pm
(must reserve a time for your audition-- no walk-ins)
AUDITION: Perform a 2-5 minute solo piece about your life. There can be words; it can be silent; there can be lots of movement; it can be still, it can be about a specific aspect of you/your life or it can be a broad sweep of your whole life. It's up to you. Just a show a little about yourself and your piece should reflect your understanding of the Neo-Futurist aesthetic. We are casting 4-7 adults. Neo-Futurism in a Nutshell is a good resource:www.nyneofuturists.org/about
THE GROUP: Largely influenced by the Neo-Futurists of NYC and Chicago (neofuturists.org; www.nyneofuturists.org), this group is inspired by the non-illusory theatre aesthetic. Performers are only ever themselves in the actual space they are in with the actual people and objects surrounding them. Miming is discouraged. We do not aim to suspend any disbelief or convince the audience that we are someone else, somewhere else, etc. We may change the setting or lighting or use props or costume pieces but it is never with the intention of fooling anyone. The aim is to deliver an interesting, personal, thought provoking, honest body of performance bits.
All performers are involved in writing, editing, directing, and performing in original pieces. Pieces are intended to be short and should reflect what cast members are interested in/thinking about/concerned with in their lives. At rehearsals we'll present new pieces, rehearse our show, brainstorm and workshop our performance. We will use improv tools to work through our pieces and develop new ones.
COMMITMENT: We will set a weekly rehearsal for 3 hours per meeting. We will start with a monthly show held at Anam Cara Theatre. Commitment to this group is necessary. We are looking for folks who are excited about participating in a group that meets and performs regularly. That said, if you got cast in your dream role on Broadway and needed to take a hiatus, that's totally cool.

More about the film:
Join acclaimed director Velcrow Ripper (Scared Sacred, Fierce Light) on a journey deep inside the revolution of the heart that is erupting around the planet, as he asks the question, “How could the crisis we are facing become a love story?”
Occupy Love explores the growing realization that the dominant system of power is failing to provide us with health, happiness or meaning. The old paradigm that concentrates wealth, founded on the greed of the few, is causing economic and ecological collapse. The resulting crisis has become the catalyst for a profound awakening: millions of people are deciding that enough is enough – the time has come to create a new world, a world that works for all life.
The film connects the dots in this era of rapidly evolving social change, featuring captivating insider scenes from the Egyptian Revolution, the Indignado uprising in Spain, Occupy Wall Street in New York, Indigenous activists at the Alberta Tar Sands, the climate justice movement, and beyond. Woven throughout the action oriented backbone of the film is a deep exploration of public love, and compelling stories of an emerging new paradigm. It features some of the world’s key visionaries on alternative systems of economics, sustainability, and empathy, including Naomi Klein, Bill McKibben, Jeremy Rifkin, bell hooks and Charles Eisenstein.
Occupy Love is a moving, transformative, heartfelt film, featuring Ripper’s signature stunning visuals and rich soundscapes. A powerful cinematic experience that will leave audiences inspired.

Crave
Anam Cara’s latest production, Crave, will run at the end of this month for one weekend only. Performances will be held at Toy Boat
Community Arts Space (101 Fairview
Road , Asheville )
April 26 - 28 at 8 p.m.
Crave is a
non-linear, emotionally intense and deeply psychological play exploring the
troubled, desperate minds of four illusive characters (named only A, B, C and
M). Through its stream-of-consciousness
style fragments and images, Crave communicates
directly with the inner psyche of audience members in an unmediated, visceral, and
poetic manner, creating a theatre-going experience that is markedly personal
and engaging. With Crave, British playwright Sarah Kane captures much of the longing
and the torment that led her to take her own life at the age of 28, having
already amassed a reputation for her ground-breaking yet irreverent works.
Skillfully led by director Erinn Huntley, Anam Cara’s
talented cast brings this abstract and evocative script to life using strong
elements of physical theatre. “I’ve
never done anything quite as emotionally intuitive and experimental a Crave,” confides Dahlia Legault, who
plays C. “I love theatre that pushes the boundaries of realities and thus makes
us put our own into question, and Crave
is definitely a production that does so.”
In a nutshell:

"Crave is a tour-de-force tone poem for four voices. The play is non-linear, fragmented and fractured; it bounces through time like the thoughts and feelings of a confused, conflicted and desperate mind. It meditates obsessively on themes of the inescapability of trauma, love and its inadequacy to wholly redeem, hope and hopelessness, despair and craving. . . .There is no story, no message and only elusive wisps of narrative. It is experiential in nature and is driven by the rapid-fire associations of a troubled mind." from The Catastrophic Theatre Company
